Memphis Grizzlies | Odds and More
The Memphis Grizzlies are an American professional basketball team based in Memphis, Tennessee. The Grizzlies compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Southwest Division of the Western Conference of the league. The Grizzlies play their home games on FedExForum. The team is owned by Robert Pera. The Grizzlies are currently the only team in North America's major professional sports leagues based in Memphis.
The team was originally established as the Vancouver Grizzlies, an expansion team that joined the NBA for the 1995-96 season. After the 2000-01 season ended, the Grizzlies moved to Memphis.
The Grizzlies have not yet formally withdrawn a number, but have announced plans to withdraw their first number at a time yet to be determined. After the Grizzlies dropped Zach Randolph during the 2017 off-season, the team announced that the #50 that Randolph wore from 2010 to 2017 would be retired. Just before the 2017-18 season, the team also announced that Tony Allen #9 would also retire after his signing with the New Orleans Pelicans. After redeeming Marc Gasol during the 2018-19 season exchange deadline, the team announced that Gasol #33 would be retired.
Despite being one of the youngest teams in the NBA, the Grizzlies are rivals to the Los Angeles Clippers. The Memphis Grizzlies and the Clippers have been rivals since the 2011-12 season, when the Clippers eliminated the Grizzlies in seven games in the first round of the 2012 NBA playoffs. The Grizzlies returned the favor in the 2012-13 season, eliminating the Clippers in six games in the first round of the 2013 NBA playoffs.
The Memphis Grizzlies also have a rivalry with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The two teams will meet in the playoffs in 2011, 2013 and 2014. The Thunder beat the Grizzlies in the conference semifinals in 2011 and in the conference quarterfinals in 2014. Each of those two series went to seven games. The Memphis Grizzlies dispatched the Thunder in five games during the conference semifinals in 2013, before being defeated by the San Antonio Spurs in the conference finals that same year.
The Memphis Grizzlies' rivalry with the San Antonio Spurs dates back to 2004 when the Spurs swept the Grizzlies in the first round. Seven years later, they would meet again in the 2011 NBA playoffs. The Grizzlies defeated the Spurs in six games, making it the fourth time an eighth-seeded has beaten a first-seeded in the playoffs. They would then meet again in the Western Conference Finals in 2013, where the Spurs once again swept the Grizzlies to the NBA Finals and were swept again in 2016, due to the many injuries the Grizzlies had during the season. They met again the following year, where the Grizzlies lost in six games.
