The Indianapolis Colts are a NFL team based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Colts compete in the NFL as a member of the Southern Division of the American Conference. Since the 2008 season, the Colts have played their games at Lucas Oil Stadium. Previously, the team had played for over two decades (1984-2007) at the RCA Dome.

The Baltimore Colts played their last home game in Baltimore on December 18, 1983, against the then Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans). The owner and CEO Jim Irsay continued to request improvements to Memorial Stadium or the construction of a new stadium. As a result of poor field performance and stadium problems, fan attendance and team income continued to decline. City officials were prevented from using taxpayer funds to build a new stadium, and the modest proposals offered by the city were not acceptable to either the Colts or the Baltimore Orioles franchise in MLB.

Although Irsay assured fans that his greatest wish was to stay in Baltimore, he began conversations with other cities willing to build new NFL stadiums, eventually narrowing the list of cities to two: Phoenix and Indianapolis. Under the administration of Mayors Richard Lugar and then William Hudnut, Indianapolis had embarked on an ambitious project to reinvent itself as a "Great American City. The Hoosier Dome, later renamed the RCA Dome, was specifically built and ready to house an NFL expansion team.

They were one of three NFL teams that joined the American Football League (AFL) to form the AFC after the 1970 merger. While they were the Baltimore Colts, the team advanced to the playoffs 10 times and won three AFC championships, as well as three NFL Championship games in 1958, 1959 and 1968. The Colts played in two Super Bowls while in Baltimore, losing to the New York Jets in Super Bowl III and defeating the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V. The Colts moved to Indianapolis in 1984 and since then have appeared in the playoffs 16 times, won two AFC conference championships and one Super Bowl, defeating the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI.

The Indianapolis Colts have 20 members in the NFL Hall of Fame.
