The Liga MX or also known as the Liga BBVA MX for sponsorship reasons is the top professional football division of the Mexican football league system. The league itself comprises 18 clubs at the moment as there are plans to add 2 more teams, all depends if the owners of the all the currents decide on making it happen.

The soccer season in Mexico has two tournaments per season: Apertura, which is the summer tournament from July to December and the Clausura, which is the winter tournament from January to May. So instead of having one long season, you get two short seasons. With two tournaments each year, this means that you get two champions crowned each season: confusing for most, but when it comes down to money, makes a lot of sense.
Liga MX has 18 teams. So the clubs all play 17 matches, facing every team once. The top eight teams make la liguilla, the Mexican "playoffs: or mini-league as many people consider it to determine the champion. Same thing happens for the Clausura, only the fixtures are reversed so that every team plays home and away against every other team over the course of the full season. The first 4 teams in the table at the end of the regular phase of the tournament qualify to the Liguilla: the Mexican playoffs or mini-league as many people consider it. The other 8 teams play each other in order to qualify for the other final 4 liguilla spots.

Out of the 56 teams to have competed in the league, the team with most titles is América which has 13 times, followed by Guadalajara (12), Toluca (10), Cruz Azul (8), León, UANL and UNAM (7), and Pachuca and Santos Laguna (6). The last league champions are Monterrey, who won the Apertura 2019 tournament.
