The Washington Commanders are a professional NFL team based in the Washington metropolitan area. The Commanders compete in the NFL as a member of the Eastern Division of the National Conference. The team plays its home games on FedExField in Landover, Maryland.

The Commanders have played more than 1,000 games since their founding 86 years ago in 1932, and are one of five NFL franchises to record more than 600 regular season and playoff wins, reaching that mark in 2015. The Commanders have won five NFL Championships (including three Super Bowls), and have won fourteen NFC divisional titles and five NFC conference championships. It was the first NFL franchise with an official marching band and the first with a fight song, Hail to the Commanders.

From 1936 to 1945, the Commanders went to the NFL Championship six times, winning two of them. The second period lasted from 1982 to 1991, where the Commanders appeared seven times in the postseason, won four NFC championships and won three Super Bowls in four appearances

The Commanders have also experienced failure in their history. The most notable period of overall failure was from 1946 to 1970, during which the Commanders had only four winning seasons (over .500) and only one playoff appearance. In 1961, the franchise recorded its worst regular season record with a score of 1-12-1.
